I’m on the Medifast plan, currently the “5 & 1” portion of it. Specifically I’m doing it through the Take Shape For Life program. My friends Paul and Michelle have been at it awhile now and are doing really well. I used to work with Paul, so he knows my day-to-day habits pretty well, so when he said I could do this, I believed him.

A quick rundown of what this program is: packaged food, primarily in liquid or soft form. Shakes, soups, pudding, bars, etc. It’s primarily soy-based. You eat within thirty minutes of waking up, and then every 3 hours after that. One of your meals (near dinnertime generally) is your “Lean and Green” where you get measured servings of protein and salad or salad-like veggies. You drink an actual amount of water, and at least at first, exercise is kept to a minimum since you are likely drastically reducing your caloric intake.

What appealed to me is the approach of this program: It’s not about losing weight, it’s about making healthy choices and living a life with (presumably) more energy and enjoyment. It’s less about “yeah, you should just keep buying our food forEVER!” and more about “yeah, we’ll help you get thin, but the important thing is giving you the tools to stay there” which I find infinitely more appealing. So that’s what drew me to this one.

I also like that it has something in common with other meal plans like this, which is a group that gets together and talks about how things are going and making choices and what have you. So far it’s been nice to have other people who are on it too get together and chat. I feel better knowing I’m not the only person who thinks the oatmeal is grotacious, or that other people have a hard time going out to eat.

You can find all the information you need here on one of the tubes, just help yourself. Keep in mind like lots of other things, if something sounds pretty slanted, there might be more to the story of the person who posted it in the first place. I’m not saying I agree or disagree with anything that’s out there, but I’ve researched things online in the past and it’s pretty easy to tell when someone has an agenda.

  1. Hey fitKelly-

I have not been doing my job! You are following Dr. Anderson’s Habit’s of Health program to make permanent lifestyle changes. Medifast is just a tool to use during the first phase of the 4 phase program. You can not say if you are building a sky scraper that you built it with a hammer. It is just one tool in a complex process. Love the blog!
